The Z-28 is the closest
thing to a racing car you can buy from an American automaker.
The Z-28 is a special option package that turns the Camaro into
a Group 2 sedan; just add a rollbar and you've got all the pieces
to go racing. The heart
of the Z-28 is a limitedproduction 302 cu. in. version of
Chevy's small-block V-8, and it feels much stronger than the
327s and 350s that are sold in Chevy's Super Sport packages.
The Z-28's 302 comes with a hot cam, a huge carburetor, solid
lifters, and special rods and pistons. It's the most responsive
production V-8 we've ever driven, and will whip the Z-28 through
the quarter-mile at almost 100 mph. You also get a lot of
other special stuff with the Z-28-like a handling package,
heavy-duty suspension parts-and they won't sell it to you
without power disc brakes and a close-ratio 4-speed gearbox.
This year, multi-leaf rear springs have replaced the monoplate
springs and single traction rod, and the shocks are biasmounted
fore and aft of the axle, and axle hop under acceleration
is reduced. Some lack of positive axle location is apparent
during a panic stop, but it's better than last year.
Related to ordinary Camaros,
the Z-28 is what a Shelby GT-350 is to an ordinary Mustang-a
lot tougher. |
