That the Fury III
is not America's sweetheart is a sad reflection on the taste
and perception of the American public, This car, which is Plymouth's
entry in the mass-class sweepstakes so handily dominated by
the Chevrolet Impala and the Ford Galaxie, is a truly outstanding
machine for the money. It
is tastefully styled, both inside and out, and feels taut
and silent under even the nastiest road conditions. Comfort
is impressive, although Plymouth has, to its everlasting credit,
resisted the temptation of providing the kind of jello-bowl
suspension that has become omnipresent on the big Chevys and
Fords. Visibility is very good and the driver can make it
down the highway with a Fury III and honestly feel that he
has some direct influence over what the machine is doing.
No question, the Fury II and III (the latter has better trim)
models are the besthandling cars in the so-called "volume"
segment of the auto market.
The standard V-8 for the Fury
is a fusty 318 cu. in., 2-bbl. V-8, and this, if anything,
is a flaw in the appointment. Such an otherwise modern sedan
needs more performance (with no sacrifice in economy) and
one can only hope that a version of Chrysler's new 340 cu.
in. V-8 will be offered in the future. In the meantime, spend
a few extra bucks and get the optional 383. |
